Joseph Hopper

Do you feel misunderstood and stuck in your head? Do you feel a desire for change but are lacking direction? Maybe you feel stuck in a relationship, a job, or a state of mind that has left you feeling unsatisfied, anxious, or depressed. As a clinician, I believe that my role is to create a completely non-judgmental space for you to process and grow. The more we can be vulnerable in expressing our true (and sometimes messy) selves, the closer we get to living fully, authentically, and with a sense of ease. I approach every session with an open mind, and a deep sense of compassion for your unique story. I am transparent, collaborative, and am a valuable resource for you on your path towards meaningful change, peace of mind, and personal empowerment.

I work with clients ages 13+ who are experiencing ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, substance misuse, are having existential questions or are stuck in building their identity; who are in the middle of a stressful life transition, are having family issues, issues in work and/or school, difficulty with self-esteem or social skills, grief, or loss of a relationship.

When working with adolescent clients, ages 13+, I find it extremely important to maintain a certain level of developmentally appropriate confidentiality and privacy, and think it is especially important for a teen to have autonomy and choice in the therapeutic process. At the same time, I recognize the importance of giving psychoeducation and support to parents who are looking for the best ways to help their child. I communicate effectively with parents, and help facilitate getting to know your child for the unique person that they are. I hope to offer guidance in setting a foundation for healthy patterns, a strong sense of self-esteem, effective coping, and ease in moving through the unavoidable transitions in their lives.

My Experience & Education:

As a native Athenian, I have had the privilege of meeting people from all walks and ways of life. My experience has fostered the belief that we all have a unique story to tell which in turn leads us all to our own unique struggles. While earning my Bachelor’s degree in Sociology at UGA, I was able to study people on a larger scale. I decided, in my years away from school, that I wanted to turn my focus to the experiences of the individual. This led me to the Professional Counseling program at UGA where I earned my Master's degree in May 2018. During and after graduating, I have gained experience working in out-patient settings, as well as in a residential treatment facility for addiction, where I lead groups and conduct individual counseling.

What to Expect from Me:

I am currently available for individual sessions with clients ages 13+. Sessions are typically 50 minutes long. Please call our main office at 706-850-7041, and let the Intake Coordinator know you are interested in scheduling with me. I look forward to working with you!
